In 1857, H.B Farnie using the pseudonym A Keen Hand, wrote The Golfer’s Manual (a descriptive and historical depiction of the game in Scotland), stating that “Let the novice invest in a pair of stout shoes (boots constrain the ankle too much), roughed with small nails or sprigs, and he will march comfortably and safely over the most slippery ground that can be turned out by the meridian sun in the dog days.” Henry Brougham Farnie would be amazed and astounded by the range of golf shoes available to his counterparts over 150 years later.
Conversely, offering to improve the traction of a modern day golfer’s shoes with the aid of a nail would result in discovering a new use for a 5 iron or a driver.
Golf shoes have certainly come a long way from William Park’s 1917 US patent for the first (men’s) golf shoe. Today there are many different styles, from the casual trainer-type shoe to the more formal Oxford-style golfing shoes.
