Every golfer will aim to make the sort of shots that they see on the TV where the ball is hit and stops just next to the hole and wonder how it’s done.  The answer is that they have specific wedges that are designed for such shots.  The majority of professional golfers now carry on average four wedges in their bag and the reason for this is so they have got most eventualities covered.  You don’t want to carry one wedge and then end up in a situation where that wedge isn’t suitable for the shot you need to make.

Wedges are available in pitching, gap and lob wedge models in a variety of lofts.  The Pitching Wedge is probably the one wedge that every player has and is usually used from about 100 to 125 yards from the pin.  The loft in Pitching Wedges ranges between 46 and 50 degrees depending on the manufacturer.  The Gap Wedge is used to fill the gap between the pitching and sand wedges and can carry lofts between 50 and 54 degrees.  The Sand Wedge is not just for use in the sand traps.  Sand Wedges provide a great amount of spin and stopping power.  Usually used from 90 yards into the pin, as well as sand traps, its loft is usually between 55 and 59 degrees.  The Lob Wedge is used for shorter high shots around the green that you would like to stop quickly. They generally have a loft of 60 to 64 degrees and are a lot of fun to hit.

As a general rule of thumb the average player should try to space the loft of the different wedges to 4 degrees, so there should be 4 degrees difference from pitching wedge to gap wedge, 4 degrees form gap wedge to sand wedge , and 4 degrees form sand wedge to lob wedge.
