The Differences Between Types of Golf Wedge

Don’t know your lob wedge from your pitching wedge?  Then read on.

There are four different types of golf wedges available and these are pitching wedges, gap wedges, sand wedges and lob wedges.  You may come across other types of wedges, but these are generally just other names for the wedges listed above.  What separates each of these wedges is the degree of loft in the clubface.

A pitching wedge is usually included with a set of irons and is the one golf wedge that every golfer will have.  The loft of a pitching wedge is normally between 46 and 50 degrees, depending on the manufacturer.  Of the different types of wedge, this is the one that will provide the longest distance.

Gap wedges have a loft between 50 and 54 degrees and fill the “gap” between your pitching wedge and sand wedgeGap wedges do not come supplied with sets of irons and are sold as individual units.  Gap wedges are also referred to as dual wedges, approach wedges or attack wedges.

Sand wedges are sometimes included with sets of irons and have a loft between 55 and 59 degrees.  Don’t let the name make you think that these are only for escaping from bunkers.  Sand wedges can be, and often are, hit from 90 yards into the pin as well as sand bunkers and provide a great amount of spin and stopping power.

Last, but by no means least is the lob wedgeLob wedges, like gap wedges, are sold as individual clubs and are not included with sets of irons.  Lob wedges have a loft of 60 to 64 degrees and are used for shorter high shots around the green that you would like to stop quickly.

Now that you know which wedges are which, use this information to pick out the perfect wedge to help your game at Golfbuyitonline.  A handy tip is to space the lofts between your wedges by a minimum of 4 degrees.  For example, if your pitching wedge has a loft of 48 degrees, then the loft of your gap wedge should be 52 degrees, your sand wedge should be 56 degrees and your lob wedge should be 60 degrees.
