The Madeira Island Open
We’re already into day two of the Madeira Island Open. The Madeira Island Open is a men’s professional golf tournament on the European Tour, played on the Madeira Islands in Portugal. It was founded in 1993 and is the first event of the season played in Europe.
The tournament has one of the smallest prize funds on the tour (€700,000 in 2007), and few of the tour’s top players take part. It is one of three European Tour events currently staged in Portugal each year, the others being the Portuguese Open and the Portugal Masters. It was hosted at Santo da Serra Golf Club from 1993 to 2008, but this year will be hosted at Porto Santo Golfe.
Last year’s winner was Scotsman Alastair Forsyth which was his second professional European win.
Forsyth turned professional in 1998. He won MasterCard Tour Order of Merit in 1999, having won the St Omer Open Championship, now a European Tour event, during the season.
Forsyth has played on the European Tour since 2000, after winning the qualifying school in 1999. In his début season, he just missed out on the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award, which went to England’s Ian Poulter. His best season to date was 2003, when he finished 19th on the European Tour Order of Merit. His first tour victory came at the 2002 Malaysian Open, and he has since managed just one further title, the 2008 Madeira Island Open.
Forsyth plays with Callaway kit and in his kit bag you’ll find:

• Callaway FT Fairway Woods
• Callaway X-Forged Irons 3-9
