How to hit consitent shots with your Irons

Any golf beginner will find trying to hit consistent shots with irons to be difficult in your first few games. However with practice and the application of a few simple principles it is achievable.

To improve consistency in your shots you need to consider the following factors:

Your posture, you feet need to be pointing to the target with your knees flexed, back straight and the weight resting towards your heels.

When you are taking the shot take the club back using a hand and arm swing, making sure that your wrists are fully cocked.

Also ensure that your body position is as still as possible as you swing your club around your body. Keeping the right knee flexed as you make the back swing will ensure you only turn your hips 45%.

The left side of you body must be cleared out of the way before you strike the ball. Doing this well enable you to generate lots of speed on the club head therefore the result will be the ball going further.

Remember you are in control of how much power is put into the shot so having control over this will be beneficial to you and will help you develop consistency with your iron shots.

Finally make notes to as how far you typically hit the ball with each iron, this will help you realise your potential.

How to get the most out of your Wedge

Golf wedges are speciality clubs that have been designed to gain great loft, but, not vast distances.

The greatest concentration of shots that a golfer plays will be within a short distance of the hole (with 100-120 yards of the pin being where 70% of all ball play is located) and wedges were born out of the necessity for a club that could increase accuracy at shorter distances and cope with the many pitfalls dotted around the green, such as a bunker or hill.

Wedges land softly, with minimal roll, so mastering this club is a must for golfers wishing to improve their round totals and lower their handicap, because the ball stops at or very close to the spot the golfer intended.

In order to master the art of wedge shots there are some simple rules which should be followed:

  • The lower body should remain steady and by opening up the hips, a golfer adopts an open posture, which allows freedom of movement of the shoulders and arms.
  • Avoid attempting to lift or scoop the ball, but, instead hit down and through the ball by turning the wrists.
  • Place your feet together to allow your upper body and arms to work as though one part.
  • The tempo of your game does not waiver, so in order to pull off a great wedge shot, a golfer should adjust their backswing. Shorter distances require less backswing and greater distances, obviously, more.
  • Shoulders should line up to the ball, chest should be turned away from the target and arms should remain free.
  • Allow the wedge to flow by maintaining a soft grip on the club. Do not attempt to force the shot but allow the wedge to do its job.
  • The right foot should remain firmly on the ground or left foot with left-handed players.
  • By keeping hands low a golfer will hit down and through the ball, making for a better end result.

By getting to grips with what you can make a golf wedge do for their game can, vastly improve a golfer’s quality of play and make achieving par or below on holes a distinct possibility.

SLOCUM BANKS THE BARCLAYS AS TITLEIST SURPASSES 100 TOUR WINS IN 2009

Fed Ex Cup win for Heath Slocum sees Pro V1 victories break through the century mark yet again

Titleist golf ball loyalist, Heath Slocum, trusted the precision and feel of the Pro V1x to claim the opening event of the 2009 Fed Ex Cup Playoffs and raise Titleist’s win count past the century mark for the 2009 season. Slocum held off the challenge of a number of Major champions to claim a one-shot victory following a final round 4-under par 67 and 9-under total of 275. Titleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker and Pro V1x loyalist Padraig Harrington finished one shot behind Slocum on 8-under par, as the Titleist Pro V1 family continues to be the choice of players at the top of leaderboards across the world’s Tours.

Slocum enjoyed victory ahead of a top-10 that included eight Titleist golf ball loyalists among the 11 players finishing in the top-10 and ties. As well as being the choice of the top finishers at Liberty National, Titleist was also the choice of the majority of the field, as 81 players put their trust in the unrivalled playability of the #1 ball in golf, compared to 12 for the nearest competitor. Titleist also topped the counts for wedges and putters respectively.

The popularity of Titleist golf balls on the PGA Tour was mirrored on the European Tour at this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship, where eight of the top 10 and ties put their trust in Titleist. Titleist was also the most played golf ball at Gleneagles with 102 players teeing up either a Pro V1 or Pro V1x, compared to 28 for the nearest competitor.

Elsewhere, Mi Jung Hur trusted the Pro V1 to claim her maiden victory on the LPGA Tour at the Safeway Classic, where Titleist was also the most played golf ball with 101 players compared to 31 for the nearest competitor. There was a further victory for the Pro V1 on the Champions Tour, where Titleist golf ball loyalist Loren Roberts won the Boeing Classic by one shot beating full-line Titleist player Mark O’Meara into second place. On the Sunshine Tour, Joe Kruger completed Titleist’s four win weekend, as he trusted the Pro V1x to claim a one-shot win at the Zambia Open. These wins across worldwide professional tours take Titleist’s win count to 104 for 2009, more than four times the nearest competitor with 21.

Titleist is not only the preferred choice of Tour professionals. This weekend the youngest player to win the prestigious US Amateur Championships trusted the workability and precision of Titleist throughout his bag. The 17-year old who is the youngest winner in the tournament’s 109 year history used 14 Titleist clubs and the Pro V1 ball to claim the title, and thus qualify for next years’ Masters, Open Championship and US Open.

The constant flow of victories for the legendary Pro V1 franchise, including Heath Slocum’s Fed Ex Cup Playoff victory, which takes Titleist’s worldwide win count past the 100 mark, proves once again that the game’s elite continue to opt for the matchless performance of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x.
