Fed Ex Cup win for Heath Slocum sees Pro V1 victories break through the century mark yet again

Titleist golf ball loyalist, Heath Slocum, trusted the precision and feel of the Pro V1x to claim the opening event of the 2009 Fed Ex Cup Playoffs and raise Titleist’s win count past the century mark for the 2009 season. Slocum held off the challenge of a number of Major champions to claim a one-shot victory following a final round 4-under par 67 and 9-under total of 275. Titleist Brand Ambassador Steve Stricker and Pro V1x loyalist Padraig Harrington finished one shot behind Slocum on 8-under par, as the Titleist Pro V1 family continues to be the choice of players at the top of leaderboards across the world’s Tours.

Slocum enjoyed victory ahead of a top-10 that included eight Titleist golf ball loyalists among the 11 players finishing in the top-10 and ties. As well as being the choice of the top finishers at Liberty National, Titleist was also the choice of the majority of the field, as 81 players put their trust in the unrivalled playability of the #1 ball in golf, compared to 12 for the nearest competitor. Titleist also topped the counts for wedges and putters respectively.

The popularity of Titleist golf balls on the PGA Tour was mirrored on the European Tour at this week’s Johnnie Walker Championship, where eight of the top 10 and ties put their trust in Titleist. Titleist was also the most played golf ball at Gleneagles with 102 players teeing up either a Pro V1 or Pro V1x, compared to 28 for the nearest competitor.

Elsewhere, Mi Jung Hur trusted the Pro V1 to claim her maiden victory on the LPGA Tour at the Safeway Classic, where Titleist was also the most played golf ball with 101 players compared to 31 for the nearest competitor. There was a further victory for the Pro V1 on the Champions Tour, where Titleist golf ball loyalist Loren Roberts won the Boeing Classic by one shot beating full-line Titleist player Mark O’Meara into second place. On the Sunshine Tour, Joe Kruger completed Titleist’s four win weekend, as he trusted the Pro V1x to claim a one-shot win at the Zambia Open. These wins across worldwide professional tours take Titleist’s win count to 104 for 2009, more than four times the nearest competitor with 21.

Titleist is not only the preferred choice of Tour professionals. This weekend the youngest player to win the prestigious US Amateur Championships trusted the workability and precision of Titleist throughout his bag. The 17-year old who is the youngest winner in the tournament’s 109 year history used 14 Titleist clubs and the Pro V1 ball to claim the title, and thus qualify for next years’ Masters, Open Championship and US Open.

The constant flow of victories for the legendary Pro V1 franchise, including Heath Slocum’s Fed Ex Cup Playoff victory, which takes Titleist’s worldwide win count past the 100 mark, proves once again that the game’s elite continue to opt for the matchless performance of the Pro V1 and Pro V1x.

The grip is your only contact with the club so it mustn’t be overlooked when you play golf on a regular basis. You should clean and brush your golf grips regularly to attempt to maintain the original grip and feel of your clubs.

However, if you play once or twice a week then you should look to replace your grips every 12 months or so, or even sooner if signs of wear and tear are showing. If you apply quite a lot of pressure when gripping the clubs you might need to replace even more often than that! Some golfers change their grips 3 to 4 times a year as they realise what a difference it can make to their game!

When a new grip comes onto the market you should also think carefully as to whether you could gain benefit by fitting them onto your set. After all, modern surfaces keep improving all the time and technology constantly improves giving you better adhesion and contact in your hands.

Grip size is very important too – too small would rotate the hands quickly giving a draw or hook spin. On the other hand to thick a grip would hinder or slow the club rotation giving a slice or fade spin.

Climate conditions can influence grip selection too. Some grips react better in wet and some react better in drier or more humid conditions. Most grips, especially worn or part worn grips, react unfavorably in cold conditions. Badly fitted grips can also cause alignment problems which can lead to a host of problems.

So the key to success of you game is grip, get it right and it won’t let you down.

Most golfers will know the benefit of wearing a golf glove but believe it or not, some don’t. Wearing a golf glove is not a requirement, but it is recommended. There are some pro players – Fred Couples, for example – who do not wear gloves. They are very rare, however, and golf pros will always recommend the use of a glove.

Wearing a glove will help you have a better grip on the club. If you don’t wear a glove then when you swing the momentum will cause the club to swing very slightly out of your hand and wearing a glove prevents this from happening. And if you don’t you could lose control of the club and take someone out and that wouldn’t be good.

However a golf glove provides much more grip on the club so it is less prone to twisting during the swing. It also allows you to hold the club less tightly leading to a more relaxed, more accurate swing.

The biggest advantage of a glove is to prevent blisters on your hands. Blisters occur the harder you grip the more friction you will create between the grip and the hand and cause the blistering & cracking. The glove should allow you to take a grip with less tension while still maintaining a good amount of grip friction between the leather and the grip.

Oakley golf had its single biggest showing ever at a Grand Slam tournament on the PGA Tour at the 109th US Open.
