Top Five Golf Courses in Wales

Celtic Manor

Celtic Manor
1: Celtic Manor…
…A luxurious golf venue that hosted the 2010 Ryder Cup and got 2011’s Sport Venue of the Year. It also hosted a celebrity golf match featuring Alice Cooper, Ross Kemp and Jane Seymour. Featuring hotel rooms, 2 clubhouses and conference facilities, it has become the must see destination for golf enthusiasts.
2: Southerndown…
Founded in the early 20th century, this stunning course is composed of sandy links and sweeping heathland, freshened by a seabreeze. This is a challenging course, even for experienced golfers. Henry Cotton described the first hole at Southerndown as “one of the toughest opening holes in golf!”
3: Conwy Golf Club…

Conwy Golf Course
A great course slap bang against the majestic heights of Conwy Mountain. A gorgeous vintage course and a must for aesthetes.
“One of my favourite links courses. Fabulous views on a brilliant golf course with great catering – what more!” Andrew Murray
4: Royal Porthcawl…
Michael Williams of the Daily Telegraph summed it all up with; “Royal Porthcawl epitomises all that is best about the game, as it once was, even down to a creaking clubhouse that is as unchanging as the magnificent links and unrivalled hospitality.” Particularly suitable for golf societies.
5: Royal St Davids…
Set in the simply beautiful location of Snowdonia, Royal St Davids regularly hosts celebrities like F1 driver Nigel Mansell, drawn by the challenging 6,629 yard course and the exciting finish.

If you won 161 Million on the Lottery, where would you play golf and what kit would you buy?
I’d play golf at the Innisbrook golf resort in Florida. It’s a spa as well as a golf course so I could get treatments between rounds. The 72 par island course looks like something out of a dream – and is challenging enough, famed for its water hazards.

I’d have to invest in new clothes and golf clubs for the trip. Firstly a capsule wardrobe would have to be purchased.
First sleeveless Nike polo shirts in summer colours:

Then some light golf pants ideal for sudden storms and hot weather:

Some fun Footjoy socks:
And some customised Footjoys.
All topped off with some beautiful Oakley Sunglasses.

Celebrity Golf

Golf – once seen as a rather wholesome and drab sport – is gaining traction with a new breed of celebrity golfer. It started with Tiger Woods’ sex addiction scandal and messy divorce, punctuated by his wife chasing him down and smashing his car window with a golf club in a scene reminiscent of Terminator 2 – sorry, ’smashing his back window to save him after he crashed his car’.
Next came Sergio Garcia’s Mediterranean good looks and rags to riches story, followed by the mad charisma of Ian “Twitter” Poulter, who regularly courts scandal and drama on the course and the internet.
But the latest celebrity golfer is Rory Mcilroy. Rory’s an Irish boy with curls and a cheeky grin. His win at the US open made him the youngest player (at 22) since 1923 to win and was followed by a mad night partying with boyband JLS. He’s an ambassador for UNICEF and regularly models Oakleys (super luxury sunglasses), with a recent shoot in Ireland being mobbed by over 400 fans.
This new breed of celeb and changing attitudes can revive golf so the game isn’t lost in the annals of Royal Society history, but remains alive and relevant.
Ladies British Open Amateur Championship 2011

The Royal Portrush Golf Club is the scene for the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship, 2011. This is the ninth time this illustrious club has hosted this special event, starting in 1895. This year six of the world’s best amateur lady golfers will be among the competitors fighting for the top prize, with additional team competition. The championship is supported by the Ladies Golf Union, who have been promoting ladies golf for over a century. Why not visit the championship and show your support for your favourite lady golfer? Remember the changeable weather though, and invest in a golf hat for ladies, to keep sun and rain equally at bay – why not purchase an exceptionally stylish Green Lamb Visor?
BMW PGA Championship 26th-29th of May
This popular golf championship has been said to have the feel of a family friendly festival, with consoles, music, footie and of course a car show. The Seve Ballesteros Foundation is the competition’s official charity, a tribute to former contest winner Seve Ballesteros, who sadly passed away this year from brain cancer. The much loved golfer was as known for his charisma as his golf swing, though that too was exceptional, and has inspired golfers from Jack Nicklaus to Sergio Garcia. BMW have donated a BMW Z4 to the charity auction that will follow the tournament.
